Web Writing Basics

When looking through varying sites, there is a certain style of writing that we are unconsciously attracted to. For all the people out there interested in starting a blog, or any website for that matter, mimicking this writing style is the best way to make your website readable for your audience.

Make it scannable

We have 6-8 seconds to catch a viewer’s attention on the web. That’s less than the attention span of a goldfish. With that in mind, it is important to keep your writing clear and concise. This means having smaller paragraphs and subtitles with the main points. This way the viewer can get the information they need without necessarily reading every word.

Make it matter

If the web content does not matter to the viewer, they’re not going to read it. Every time you write, consider why the content matters to viewers. Make sure the writing stays focused on whatever the topic is to keep you your readers on your site.

Make it user-friendly

Don’t write in long, drawn out paragraphs full of complex terms and ideas. Split your paragraphs into easy to read chunks with set ideas. Also make sure to use simple language so that someone with no prior knowledge of the topic can understand. The more user-friendly it is, the more people will be likely to use it.

Important information first

Make sure all of the most important information is at the top of the page. Most people will not read to the end of whatever article or content but they should still get the information. Use key phrases to draw in viewer to the most relevant topics in the page, then fill in the details for them.

All websites should also follow AP Style, which changes yearly.
